April 16, 2024 is Equal Pay Day. It symbolizes how far into the next year the average woman must work in order to have earned what the average man had earned in the previous year.
Intersectionality
The pay gap is not just about gender. The gap increases substantially when intersecting with other forms of discrimination such as those experienced by:
racialized women
Indigenous women
immigrant and migrant women
women with disabilities
elderly women
women who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer (LGBTQ)
Discrimination in pay is not limited to one career or demographic. Pay discrimination affects women of all ages, races, and education levels – regardless of their family decisions.
Pay gaps are a human rights violation. It’s time to speak up.

Dear Member,
This year's ECE & Child Care Worker Appreciation Day is especially significant. It is a time of transformation for our sector and we are tasked with imagining a different kind of early years; a different kind of world. While change can be scary and unpredictable, it can also bring relief and hope. Perhaps this is when we say goodbye to programming on our breaks? Maybe this is when we finally have staffing that is robust? Is this when we are all finally compensated properly for our work?
With the Canada Wide Early Learning and Child Care agreement being implemented and our historic Local 2484 Coordinated Bargaining Campaign underway, there is a lot to be hopeful about. The current reality of child care is admittedly very different, but we have made progress and it is entirely due to YOU. Families are receiving rebates on last year's fees because child care workers continued to provide services during COVID-19 and its recovery. You kept going to work under some of the most difficult conditions in history and now have the attention of the nation.
This is a time of evolution for our field, but also us as educators. We are at a moment when the world needs to hear your ideas and expertise. You have the knowledge and experience necessary to build a Canada Wide Early Learning and Child Care program that will ensure your health and professional security. This year, we celebrate the competent and caring educators and workers you have always been, while also encouraging the emergence of an even stronger and more confident individual that has earned our endless admiration many times over.
Happy Early Childhood Educator & Child Care Worker Appreciation Day!

WE DID IT! After decades of advocacy, child care workers across the country have a Canada-wide Child Care deal. While we know our work to ensure the deal is focused on workforce strategies and expanding the non-profit sector, this is a milestone in education, care, and women’s rights. Canada will be a better place for EVERYONE because of our work and we must take the time to use this win to fill ourselves up with pride and hope.
On May 1st, we will join the Ontario Federation of Labor Rally/March to Queen’s Park in Toronto for 2:00pm. This province wide day of action for A Worker First Agenda will be a chance for us to gather in person, build community, and celebrate our collective WIN.
CUPE will provide light snacks, drinks, and giveaways. More details to come.
It’s official—Andrea Horwath, Steven Del Duca, and Mike Schreiner to attend the Equal Pay Coalition Leaders Debate!*
The Leaders’ Debate will be a hybrid event in compliance with COVID protocols. It will be filmed before an audience in Toronto on Equal Pay Day (April 12) and livestreamed across the province.
